May 12, 2009

The Cloverdale Rodeo.

It starts this Friday and ends on Monday.

This long-time annual event is more than just about bull riding, world-class cowboys and enthusiastic rodeo fans.

It's also about great music, a great midway with plenty of thrills, a terrific number of horticultural exhibits and a great display of 4H projects and animals.

The midway has more than 30 rides that will thrill and excite you.

And plenty of folks ranging from fitness to clothing to artwork and more, will be showing off what they have for sale.

On Saturday there is a parade, one of the largest and most popular in B.C.

The parade will wind its way through the streets of Cloverdale on Saturday morning. There are over 80 unique and colourful entries including clowns, floats, bands, marching units and commercial entries.

And Saturday night one of Canada's better rock groups, Chilliwack, is showing its stuff at a free concert.

There are several ways in which you can attend the rodeo and fair.

If you are only interested in the country fair, tickets will cost you $10 for adults, children seven years old and under are free.

You can only buy these tickets at the fairgrounds.

If you want to attend the rodeo, tickets to the various events start at $15.75 and if you buy them online you also get free admission to the fair grounds, a savings of $10. But you must buy these tickets beforehand.

For each daily rodeo event you need to buy separate tickets.

The rodeo will feature some of the world's best cowboys competing for a great jackpot of $360,000.

One of the highlights is performances by internationally renowned Charro (Mexican horseman) Tomas Garcilazo.

He will dazzle crowds with his skilled horsemanship and rope artistry, both of which have defined him as one of the world's top Charros.

All in all there are plenty of things to do at the rodeo and the fair.

Let's keep our fingers crossed that the weather will be pleasant.

The forecast calls for it to be nice.

Tour An Alpaca Farm

alpaca.jpg

This long weekend it's happening on Monday.

That's the day when it's shearing day for a farm in the Fraser Valley, about 1 1/2 hours from Vancouver.

The farm is Capella Alpacas and it will be shearing its herd from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Alpaca fibre is used for making knitted and woven items, much as sheep's wool is.

But it is super fine and feels luxurious.

The farm started four years ago with five alpacas and today there are 50 of them.

The farm is close to the Fraser River dike and after you have seen the alpacas you can stroll along the dike and then head back and check out the wonderful alpaca items that are available for sale at the farm's gift shop.

You can also call ahead for a tour of the farm at:

Steveston Weekend Visit

Steveston.

A sleepy little village.

This weekend will be a perfect time to visit this small community situated right beside the mighty Fraser River.

There is plenty to do.

Have lunch, have dinner or have breakfast at many of the restaurants that are right on the pier overlooking the water.

And if you feel really adventurous you can also buy fresh fish.

Fresh fish right at dockside where fishing boats are anchored and are selling their catch of the day at bargain basement prices.

The village is a great little place to go for a stroll and check out the boutiques and various gift shops.

It's all happening right by the water.
